Software Alternatives

Postby SweetG » Tue Jan 06, 2009 11:50 pm

Some of the hottest software that you will find these days are outrageously expensive. As part of learning web design, ya gotta know a little bit of graphic design as well. For the class I'm taking now i need a photo editor and C'mon I'm a student i didn't want to spend any money.

So i found a really nice open source program called photoscape. I was able to edit my photos for my web site and even make a background. It is a lovely program.

Open source software is great and if you're looking to save a buck or two It's a good option.
A few of my professors have recommended http://www.sourceforge.net which is a directory of reliable open source alternatives to today's hottest software programs. From what i know about open source programs; they are safe. LOL, i don't my professors would encourage the use of open source programs if they were dangerous.

Go ahead and list any good open source programs you find; Give us an idea of which ones are worth our while.

Yes, Open Source is awesome.

My absolute favorite and what seems to be a common open source program is none other than Mozilla FireFox. Once i got my hands on this browser i never turned back to IE.

I also once used an alternative to Microsoft Office, Called OpenOffice. It was a very decent program; no problems with it at all.

Another good photo editor program is GimpShop. I've seen photoscape and compared to it Gimp is a little bit more complex.

I am the same way with Firefox. The one thing i absolutely love about FireFox is there add-ons. One in particular is the web developer add-on, which was recommend to me by my web design professor. It helps me check my code for errors and saves me a lot of time.

I know they even have an add-on for bloggers so they can still surf the web and post to their blog while doing it. I tired it once when i took my own shot at blogging (lol i didn't have the patience) and it was very convenient. It docks at the bottom of your browser window and stays there even if you move between tabs.

What I like most in this "Software Alternatives" is the possibility that they give to the users to give their feedback about the product.
I use Open Office and I think it´s very better than Microsoft Office, not just because it´s is free, but it allow me to do most of the changes that I want. He almost "adapt" the software with what the user want.

And about firefox, I really don´t understand how someone can still using IE, it´s terrible! Very ugly, low and I can´t do what I want with it...

Yea when people still tell me they are using IE, lol i give them a strange look. I will often suggest firefox to someone who is still using IE and I've converted a lot of people to FireFox.

Yeah, I tried it too, but some people is so narrow-minded... And I thing Chrome is becoming a very good browser too, Google is working a lot on it.

I LOVE Linux! I would be absolutely NOWHERE without it.
I recommend it to anyone who has an old PC in the attic, INSTALL LINUX ON IT! :) you will be amazed at the speed that old pc will deliver and how advanced the entire operating system is.

Yeah, Linux is quite a phenomenon. I use windows but I have tried it, probably going on ubuntu permanently. The best feature is that you can try it off without really installing it. Is Ubuntu the best operating system?

I beg to differ on that. Gimpshop is nowhere close to Photoshop. it is the best one in market right now.
